The tensile element (11) encircles the crossbars (10) of the bevel gear pairs (5,6) and (7,8) through more than 360 deg and the forward and return strands of the element (11) are spaced by a distance roller (12). The crossbars are preferably encircled by two or more tensile elements (11). In detail, using steel or Kevlar ropes as element (11), these are wrapped repeatedly round the crossbars whose ends engage grooves (9) in the gear pairs. To adjust the ratio between the two shafts (2,3), the gear pairs are accordingly converged or diverged. This is obtained by means of the adjuster wheel (24) and two-way threaded spindle (21) for nuts (23,26) used in turn to change the settings or the crossbar sides (17,18). The effect of this is to alter the positions of the gear pairs and thus the pre-tension of the system as a whole.
