A small-sized synchronous motor of high efficiency and high versatility. The synchronous motor includes a 2-pole permanent magnet rotor; a fixed armature coil (1) having two coil segments A and B corresponding to the permanent magnet rotor so as to operate the motor as a synchronous motor by an A.C. power source (4); and a commutation circuit including diodes (3a, 3b, 3c and 3d) for commutating the A.C. power source (4) at the start and alternately changing the directions of the current so as to activate the revolution of the permanent magnet rotor and to operate the motor as a D.C. motor, a commutator and a brush. When the rotation of the rotor approaches to synchronous speed, the commutation circuit is disconnected to switch into the synchronous operation by the A.C. power source (4). The commutator includes a conductive sliding ring (2) fitted for rotation in the concentric arrangement with the 2-pole permanent magnet rotor and having a center angle of about 180 DEG . The brush includes power supply brushes <u>a</u> and <u>b</u> so disposed as to oppose each other for supplying alternately power while coming into sliding contact with the sliding ring (2), and conductor brushes C1, C2 and conductor brushes d1, d2 so disposed as to substantially oppose one another for conducting the sliding ring (2) and the coil segments A and B, respectively.
