Backlighting system for electro-optic modulator and display device using the same

The system includes a light source (1) e.g. a fluorescent tube, surrounded by a reflector (2) which directs the light emitted along a direction (x). The reflector has the shape of a compound parabolic concentrator and cooperates with a glass waveguide (3). The wave guide lower extremity presents a micro-prism structure (4) which reflects the incident light along a direction (z). The structure surface is covered by an aluminium layer (5). The opposite extremity of the waveguide is provided with a collimator (6,8).
