The invention concerns a method and device for folding an airbag in an airbag module. The method is characterized in that the empty, spread out airbag is gathered in towards the centre to give a folded airbag with the required vertical profile. Unlike other, prior art, ways of folding an airbag, the method proposed calls for the folds to be "chaotic", i.e. they have no predetermined shape or direction. Only a few gathering tools and only a few operations are necessary to gather in the airbag. The device for carrying out the method is characterized by a lower part (2) on which the airbag (16) is spread out flat and an upper part (1) separated from the lower part (2) by distances (h) which correspond to the vertical profile required for the gathered airbag. The gathering tools (17 to 20) are mounted between the upper part (1) and the lower part (2) so that they surround the airbag (16) and so that their position relative to the airbag can be changed.
