<p>The invention relates to a process for treating biologically degradable waste, in which process the waste sludge is dewatered with the aim of increasing its dry matter content, after which additives such as chips are mixed with the waste sludge with the purpose of producing an airy waste mixture, and the waste mixture is composted in a manner known per se. According to the invention, heat which is generated in the composting process is used for evaporating water from the waste sludge prior to the actual composting process. In the most advantageous implementation of the process, the waste sludge is dewatered in a vessel at negative pressure.
