1,083,449. Shaft couplings. NEAPCO PRODUCTS Inc. May 16, 1966 [July 23, 1965], No. 21589/66. Heading F2U. A ball-spline coupling consists of a square or polygonal shaft 14 engaging a corresponding recess in a co-operating sleeve shaft 17, the walls of the recess in conjunction with channels 18 forming endless tracks for the ball trains 22, there being sufficient clearance between the shafts to ensure that under torque loading each face of the shaft 14 engages only one of the adjacent ball trains at each corner. End caps 20 are provided with arcuate portions 20a 20d forming the outer end surfaces of the ball tracks. In addition, each side wall of the sleeve shaft 17 is formed with an arcuate groove 17g providing a relief area in which the balls may move, free of load, from one side of the track to the other, to reverse their direction of movement. |
