PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance small-sized optical isolator. SOLUTION: This optical isolator is provided with a Faraday rotator 15 and polarizers positioned on an optical axis in respective ends of the Faraday rotator. The Faraday rotator is provided with an optical rotator rod 16 and a magnet assembly surrounding the optical rotator rod. The magnet assembly is provided with eight magnet sections 20-27 of a trapezoid section, and these magnet sections 20-27 are arranged so as to be constituted of a first group consisting of four magnet sections and a second group consisting of four magnet sections. By the magnet sections 20-27 of respective groups, an opening part of a square section surrounding the optical rotator rod is formed. The first and second groups are arranged matching and adjacent with each other along the optical axis. The direction of magnetic field of the first group is the direction perpendicular to the optical axis and the direction apart from the optical axis, and the direction of the magnetic field of the second group is the direction perpendicular to the optical axis and the direction approaching to the optical axis.
