PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compound presenting growth-inhibitory activity against periphytic bacteria contributing to biological spoilage, thus useful as an antifouling agent for aquatic biological spoilage. SOLUTION: The objective compound, a nitroalkane derivative of the formula (R is a 6-20C straight-chain hydrocarbon), is obtained by grinding a kind of Porifera of Okinawa growth (e.g. harvested in the neighboring waters of the Okinawa Island) in an organic solvent such as methanol followed by extraction with a solvent such as hexane and then separation with thin-layer, column and/or high-performance liquid chromatography. This compound of formula I can also be obtained by the following process: the hydroxyl group of aω- bromoalcohol is protected, and the protected alcohol is made into the corresponding ylide by using triphenylphosphine and sodium hydride, and the ylide is condensed with 3-pyridinecarbaldehyde to effect deprotection of the hydroxyl group followed by reaction with methanesulfonyl chloride and sodium nitrite.
