PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain in high productivity and yield a compound useful as a raw material for vinylpyridine-based polymers. SOLUTION: This vinylpyridine compound is expressed by formula I (R is an alkyl; (m) is 1 or 2; (n) is 0, 1, 2 or 3), e.g. 2-vinylpyridine. The compound of formula I is obtained by vapor phase catalytic reaction of a pyridineethanol compound of formula II [e.g. 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridine] in the presence of a catalyst having dehydrating ability. The catalyst is at least one compound selected from metal oxides (e.g. silicon oxide), crystalline aluminosilicates (e.g. mordenite) and metallophosphates (e.g. zirconium phosphate), and it is preferable that a metal oxide containing at least one element selected from alkali metals and phosphorus be used as a cocatalyst. |
