PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extremely suppress the generation of carbon dioxide as a by- product and to prolong the life of a catalyst in a method for synthesizing acetic acid from ethylene by a vapor-phase catalytic reaction at one stage in high space time yield. SOLUTION: Ethylene is reacted with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst containing (a) metal palladium, (b) at least one compound selected from heteropoly-acids and their salts, (c) at least one element selected from the group consisting of elements of the group 6, the group 7, the group 8, the group 9, the group 10 and the group 12 of the periodic table and/or (d) at least one element selected from the group consisting of elements of the group 11, the group 14, the group 15 and the group 16 to produce acetic acid. |
