PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communication system with which SBS can be effectively suppressed while suppressing adverse influence applied upon transmission characteristics by a dummy signal to the minimum. SOLUTION: This system is constituted so that a frequency multiplex signal outputted from a frequency multiplex signal generating part 101 can be converted to an optical signal by an electric/optic converting part 102 and that optical signal can be transmitted through an optical transmission line 103 and received at an optic/photoelectric converting part 104. Further, at this system, an optical modulation factor at the electro-optical converting part 102 is set so as to sufficiently suppress SBS and by inputting the dummy signal having a suitable frequency from a dummy signal generating part 105 to the electro-optical converting part 102, degradation in transmission characteristics is suppressed to a minimum while suppressing SBS.
