PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character plotting device and method capable of embodying the characters provided with the widths of the hemming lines of the min. possible extent or the shades of the sizes (areas) of the min. possible extent which are always visible in visual sensation on a graphic display device. SOLUTION: An information processing system has a central processing unit 1, a memory device 2, an input device 3 and a display device 4. A request to attach the hemming W of a% of the character size to the character (A) of a character size S is assumed to be previously applied to the information processing system. The central processing unit 1 first calculates the visible width Wo on the display device 4. The central processing unit 1 determines the hemming width W from the request described above. Namely, W=S dot×a% is calculated in this case. In succession, the central processing unit 1 decides whether the hemming width W is smaller than the visible width Wo or not. The central processing unit 1 plots the hemming on the display device 4 as W=Wo when the hemming width is decided to be smaller than the visible width Wo. As a result, the character provided with the hemming of the hemming width Wo of the min. possible extent which is visible in visual sensation can be embodied on the display device 4.
