PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to output character patterns of low resolution as easily readable characters with decreased variations in line widths and lessened collapse by plotting only the core lines of the character patterns. SOLUTION: A font ROM 15 is also a memory for storing the information starting the data on the character patterns widely and generally used for word processors, etc. The font data expressing the strokes of the character patterns with at least the core line shapes and line widths is stored into the font ROM 15 and the font data read out of the font ROM 5 is plotted in a core line font system. An FC 16a which occupies a part of a main memory 16 is a font cache and is a known art to speed up the display of the dot patterns of the frequency used characters by storing these dot patterns. The font cache is used in combination in this embodiment as well and the dot patterns of the characters of only the core lines obtd. by the technique are held in the FC 16a, by which the second and subsequent display of the same characters is speeded up.
