PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for recognizing empty places in a parking area, capable of reducing the costs for facility and installation works and allows correct acknowledgement of the location of empty place. SOLUTION: A monitoring image is photographed by a CCD camera 1 from above a parking area 11, and as a processing region 18 a registration area 13 is set within each parking partition 12 in a CRT screen 17. The edge in the lateral direction of the car is sensed in the processing region 18, and the mean value of density for the outer frame 19 is calculated, and the calculated edge histogram is flattened when the mean density is smaller than the predetermined reference value. The dispersion of the edge is calculated, and if it is greater than the mean density, judgement is passed that car 14 exists in the register area 13. When the car 14 exists in the area 13 continuously for a certain period, for example over five sec, a judgement as parking condition is passed, and if otherwise, judgement of empty condition is passed. |
