PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new derivative having a specific substituent, capable of easily forming a single crystal having excellent nonlinear optical characteristics as a whole and a short absorption wavelength edge and giving a new low-molecular organic nonlinear optical material. SOLUTION: The objective derivative is expressed by formula I (X<1> and X<2> are each nitro or amino; Y<1> is a 1-12C hydrocarbon group; R<1> is H, a lower alkyl or together with Y<1> and bonding N atom form a ring; A<1> is H, an electron accepting group or aπ-conjugated substituent containing an electron accepting group), e.g. 2-(N-methylanilino)ethyl 3,5-dinitrobenzoate. The objective derivative can be produced e.g. by the condensation reaction of a dinitrobenzoic acid or a dinitrobenzoyl halide of formula II (X is OH or a halogen) with an alcohol compound of formula III.
