PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a rare earth element oxide stable in the pH or the viscosity of a slurry by controlling the size of its crystallite. SOLUTION: The rare earth element oxide has >=500Åcrystal size measured by the powder X-ray diffractometry. The average particle diameter is within the range of 0.1-10μm, preferably 0.5-5μm, and the slurry in which the oxide is dispersed has pH at 7.0-9.5. The rare earth element include S, C, Y and a lanthanide having the atomic number of 57-71.
