PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease a thrust ripple on joints of secondary conductors by connecting the secondary conductors through a process of inserting a conductor for a joint having the specified length into the joint part of the secondary conductors to be arranged in a hoistway of a linear motor. SOLUTION: In an elevator to be driven by a linear motor, primary coils 7, 8 of the linear motor are provided on one side of a balance weight 4, and a secondary conductor 9 of the linear motor, facing the primary coils 7, 8 is arranged on one of a pair of guide rails. This secondary conductor 9 is formed by interposing a secondary conductor 9X for a joint having the length of 3τ/2 (τis a pole pitch) between secondary conductors 9A, 9B to be connected to each other in the longitudinal, direction, and a thrust ripple is canceled by taking the phase difference of the thrust ripples on the joints D, E on both ends of the secondary conductor 9X for the joint as 180 deg.. The joint distance L (the length of the secondary conductor 9X for the joint) is so set as to satisfy the formula; L=(2+1)τ/2 when the poles (p), (n) are taken as integral numbers of -1>=n>=0.
