PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an output of a video image of the same degree of image quality in the cue operation and the review operation by providing a means driving a recording medium at a recording medium drive speed expressed respectively by each specific formula in the cue operation and the review operation. SOLUTION: Heads 4a, 4b are fitted to a cylinder 3 and a drive means 2 drives a magnetic tape 1 in which one plane of image data are dividedly recorded on M-tracks. In this case, the recording medium is driven at a speed of L=(M-α)×W at a forward high speed reproduction and at a speed of L=(M+α)×W at a reverse high speed reproduction, where W is a track width, a is a preset constant, and L is a vertical direction component of a locus of a center line of the heads drawn on the tape 1 with respect to a track by one helical scanning.
