<p>Briquettes of iron powder are made by compaction at a pressure of 35 to 100 tons/sq. in. and have incorporated in them 0.5 to 5% by weight of an oxidation inhibitor selected from the salts and bases of the alkali and alkaline earth metals which are alkaline in aqueous solution. The briquette may also be given a surface coating of the inhibitor. Preferred inhibitors are sodium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, or trisodium phosphate, but other compounds referred to are dibasic sodium phosphate, sodium metasilicate, sodium benzoate, sodium chromate, sodium nitrite and potassium chromate. The briquette may be prepared from the product of a known rotary kiln reduction process using gaseous or solid reducing agent, the product being ground and magnetically separated and the inhibitor being added at an appropriate stage prior to compaction.</p> |
