PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium excellent in electromagnetic transducing characteristics and running durability by imparting prescribed characteristics to a magnetic recording medium with a lower layer contg. nonmagnetic powder dispersed in a binder on the nonmagnetic substrate and a magnetic layer contg. ferro-magnetic powder dispersed in a binder on the lower layer. SOLUTION: At least one lower layer contg. nonmagnetic powder dispersed in a binder is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate and a magnetic layer contg. ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder is formed as the top layer on the lower layer to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium. The ferromagnetic powder has 0.01-0.06μm average major axis size, 10-150Åcrystallite size and an acicularity ratio of 2-15. The magnetic layer contains 80-95wt.% noncombustible component. The resultant magnetic recording medium is excellent in electromagnetic transducing characteristics and running durability, high reliability is ensured and mass-production is enabled.
