PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain junction characteristics of high performance by combining the superconducting electrode of a specific material and a barrier layer material. SOLUTION: The tunnel superconducting junction element comprises an upper superconducting electrode 12 and lower superconducting electrode 11 represented by the general chemical formula M1-x Sr2 Can-1 Cun+x O2n+2+y containing the oxide of alkali earth element and copper as main ingredients, and a bismuth oxide barrier layer 13. In the formula, the element M contains at least one of lead, thallium, mercury, gallium, aluminum, boron, carbon, sulfur and phosphorus, n is integer of 1 to 5, x is a numeric value of a rang of 0<=x<=0.8 and y is a numeric value of a range of 0<=y<=1. The copper oxide high temperature superconductor has superconducting tunnel junction characteristics of high quality which has been heretofore difficult. Thus, the high quality can simply be realized to provide high industrial value.
