PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having high reproduction output and excellent in S-N ratio by forming an Fe-N-O magnetic film contg. prescribed amts. (%) of Fe, N and O on a substrate. SOLUTION: An Fe-N-O magnetic film contg. 50-80at.% Fe, 5-30at.% N and 5-40at.% O is formed on a substrate. The amt. of N in the magnetic film is smaller than the amt. of O and the magnetic film has 1,200-2,400Oe coercive force in the intrasurface direction of the film. The objective magnetic recording medium having high reproduction output and excellent in S-N ratio and electromagnetic transducing characteristics is obtd.
