At each point (A, B), the product of the spacing (a1) and the distance (d1) for the first grating (R1) and the product of the spacing (a2) and the distance (d2) for the second grating (R2) are related by a1d1 = a2d2 = kc<2> where k is an adapted constant and c is the speed of light between the two gratings. A short pulse incident normally on the first grating emerges normally from the second grating as a beam dispersed linearly in frequency in time. When a pulse is delivered in a frequency band, f, the emergent beam frequencies (F') are delayed by a time which varies linearly with the frequency giving a pulse length, T = Kf/p where p is an integer of adapted value.
