OPTICAL SWITCH FORMED BY USING NONLINEAR WAVEGUIDE ARRAY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To steepen the distribution of light at the output end of a waveguide array and to increase the extinction ratio of a switch. SOLUTION: The spacings of the output ends of the waveguides 2 of the nonlinear waveguide array 1 are made wider than the spacings between the input ends thereof and the coupling coefficients between the waveguides 2 are made gradually smaller along a propagation direction, by which the distribution of the light at the output ends of the waveguides is steepened and the extinction ratio of the switch is increased.
