The substrate includes a ceramic or glass flat support (10) with a number of partition walls formed on its surface. The spaces (11) between adjacent walls are used as display cells (13). Each cell presents an electrode (12), deposited on the back surface of the cell. A luminescent substance (16) is deposited on the lateral surface (13a) of the cell. The cell top surface is covered by a slab (14) with a second electrode (15). The cell is filled with a discharge gas. When a voltage is applied to the two electrodes, a discharge occurs in the gas and the luminescent substance generates light.
