The analysis inputs pulse doppler radar returns from a rotating antenna, analysing several range gates. For each range gate, the background return from clutter and the helicopter body are removed by filtering (14,17). The remaining response is then evaluated in terms of an amplitude histogram, forming the time and distance response. This response is evaluated against stored distributions, and a decision made as to whether a helicopter has been detected. The decision is then output.
