The device is variable in vol. between a small rest vol. and a relatively large protection vol. by an actuator (18) activated by a sensor (20). The vol. of the device is formed by a metal cell structure (22) in which pyrotechnical elements (26) forming the actuating device are integrated. The sensor device contains a distance sensor (28) which is connected to the pyrotechnical elements. It contains a time measurement device (30) and a divider (32) which forms the quotient of the measured distance and the associated time, and only activates the pyrotechnical elements if the quotient reaches or falls below a defined value.
