PEROXIDASE-ACTIVATING ORAL COMPOSITIONS

An oral care composition and method of activating peroxidase in the oral cavity of an animal is provided. The composition includes a non-enzymatic water-soluble hydrogen peroxide precursor. This precursor is capable of releasing hydrogen peroxide upon contact with water to activate the peroxidase system. The composition further contains a pH-adjusting agent to produce a selected pH that facilitates the rapid release of hydrogen peroxide from the precusor which then is available to activate the peroxidase system in the oral cavity. The method involves the administration of a mixture of a non-enzymatic water-soluble hydrogen peroxide precursor and pH adjusting agent. A process for manufacturing an oral care product is also provided that utilizes an alkali metal percarbonate as hydrogen peroxide precursor.
