The device has inner and outer supporting components which can rotate relative to one another, and which have first and second wedge-shaped grooves (11), which oppose each other radially and engage mutually. It also has alternately arranged outer and inner friction plates which engage with the first and second grooves respectively, and which can be pressed together by a hydraulic piston mechanism. A group of the outer and inner plates (15) is driven by another group of such plates, and is tensioned in one circumferential direction by a spring component (25). The latter is arranged between surfaces of the driven plates which oppose one another in the circumferential direction and an associated groove, and is made from an elastic material which is bent about a central point so that a circumferential clearance remains between both sides of a bent section of the material.
