A mail sorting apparatus that can effect sorting by mailmen and final delivery sorting through bar codes. The apparatus comprises a first accumulating means (11) having a mail circulating mechanism and provided on an upper portion of and adjacent to a supply portion (1) and a second accumulating means (14) of a fixed type provided on an upper portion of and adjacent to the first accumulating means. Thus, the sorting by mailmen can be effected by using the first and second accumulating means (11, 14). Furthermore, final delivery sorting can also be attained by repeating sorting by circulating the mails accumulated at the first accumulating means (11) to the supply portion (1).
