The transmission has equipment to affect the opposing separation (23) of disc components (8,10) on the second (4) of two discs (3,4), which are connected by an endless drive belt (11). One component is fixed and the other can move axially. The equipment uses cams (24) to press axially against the components depending on the torque and transmission ratio, so that a rising frictional contact occurs with increasing torque. The components (7,9) of the first disc (3) can also be acted upon by a force from an actuator (21) which depends on at least one external operating parameter, so that an additional friction component arises. The transmission ratio is adjusted as the belt balances the total of the contact forces on the first and second discs.
