In this novel fuel-making method, material of low calorific value is mixed with another of high calorific value, resulting in fuel of intermediate calorific value. Also claimed is a method of burning waste, in which it is made into a fuel as described, to be burned, or esp. pyrolysed or carbonised. Pref. waste, esp. industrial or household waste, is mixed with coal dust and/or paper granules. The combustible mixture is pressed to a compact form or otherwise densified. One or both of the components are dried. Heat is recycled from the combustion of the product, to dry the components. The mixture ratio is adjusted in accordance with the nature of the waste.
