The invention concerns a process and an agent for detecting antibodies against Treponema pallidum. A selection of recombinant antigens is gene-amplified and cloned and these gene-amplified and cloned antigens are then expressed in host vector systems and then purified. The purified antigens are then bound individually or together to a solid phase and the antigens bound to the solid phase are then subjected to a reaction with a material investigated for antibodies. The antibodies bound by the antigen-antibody reaction are then established qualitatively and/or quantitatively from the investigated material by means of a detection system. The detecting agent comprises the 17 kD antigen, the 47 kD antigen and TmpA.
