Recovering metals from biodegradable organic material e.g. oil-contaminated grinding wastes

Materials contaminated with biodegradable organic substances are decontaminated. Activated sludges with aerobic or anaerobic characteristics from e.g. sewage works are added to the material. The contaminated material includes metal compounds, and undergoes pretreatment, such as comminution, sieving and/or classification, then mixed with the activated sludge before further treatment with fluid and/or heat and/or air. Following decontamination, the metal compounds are separated and recycled. Also claimed is an appts. to carry out the process, in which the reaction materials, i.e. activated sludge and contaminated material, are charged into a stirred vessel forming a closed system which may have a heating plant and /or aeration plant.
