Read/write head cleaning device for audio or video tape player

The cleaning device (10) has a rectangular housing (12), which is selectively inserted in the tape player. The housing contains a vertically reciprocating cleaning head, and a cleaning element (48) reciprocated with the cleaning head, which is brought into contact with the read/write head. A drive mechanism (27) couples the tape player drive to the reciprocation drive, for cleaning the head, so that the cleaning element is reciprocated vertically when the housing is inserted in the player.
