PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the two-dimensional light quantity distribution and to obtain a light quantity distribution having high uniformity by providing a surface light source element with a light source having a diffusion surface formed on its front surface and a reflection frame having the inside surface erected along the end of this diffusion surface as the reflection surface. SOLUTION: The inside surface 11 of the inside reflection frame 3 arranged adjacent to a cold-cathode ray tube 2 is formed as the reflection surface and a reflection film reflecting the light of a visible region is attached thereto. Diffused illumination light 10 is emitted in z-axis direction. The diffused illumination light 10 from the surface light source element consisting of the cold-cathode ray tube 2 and the inside surface reflection frame 3 is white light emitted in z direction and only the linearly polarized light is extracted by one polarizing plate of the two polarizing plates arranged in orthogonally crossed nicols. The incident light on an LCD is given the double refraction meeting two-dimensional images by the pixels two-dimensionally arranged within the x-y plane and is transmitted through the polarizing plate, thereby, the light is converted into the light intensity distribution, i.e., the two-dimensional image. Of the light transmitted through the LCD, only the light within the LCD side NA (the numerical aperture determined by the incident pupil and focal length of the optical system) is introduced to the eyes. |
