The device prints on a print carrier (3) e.g. a letter, which is standing on an edge, e.g. in a franking or addressing machine. The print carrier (3) is guided on its edge during the transport and printing process. The device has a guide plate (2) which is inclined relative to vertical. The plate slidingly receives the carrier (3). It has a cut-out region (21,22) for a printing device arranged on the side of the guide plate (2) furthest from the carrier (3). The device also has a rotating conveyer belt (1) to apply a pushing force to the print carrier (3) to push it in the transport direction along the guide plate (2). The print device is a colour printing device. Pressure elements (11) are arranged on the conveyer belt (1) to move towards and away from the guide plate (2) such that the carrier (3) is detected by the pressure elements (11) at its side furthest from the guide plate (2) during the transport and printing process. The cut out region (21,22) of the guide plate (2) has at least one recess open at is downstream end in the transport direction.
