[Also in Division C5] Polystyrene and polyvinyltoluene, each crosslinked with divinylbenzene, are sulphonated with sulphuric acid or oleum, dried for 24 hours at 100‹ C. and 100 mm. Hg to a water content of about 7 wt. % (determined by the Karl Fischer method), and then further dried to a water content of below 2 wt. % by heating at 120-200‹ C. at a pressure below 100 mg. Hg. The products are then ground to grain sizes of 1-30 Á and used as catalysts (see Division C5). |
