Purified mammalian erythropoietin binding protein is disclosed and its isolation, identification, characterization, purification, and immunoassay are described. The erythropoietin binding protein can be used for regulation of erythropoiesis by regulating levels and half-life of erythropoietin. A diagnostic kit for determination of the level of erythropoietin binding protein is also described.
