An elongated workpiece 1, which has one end upset while it is subjected to resistance heating by clamping between electrodes 2 and 3, is preheated inductively or by resistance heating at the end to be upset. Contact members of 5 of the electrodes 2 produce an upsetting force in direction 6. In an upsetting machine, Fig. 4, workpieces 1 are fed by an arm 9 from a rack 8 to a pickup unit 11 which feeds the end of each workpiece into an induction heater 10. An arm 12 then lifts the workpieces to an upsetting station 1 whence they are subsequently removed by a clamping arm 13. |
