A ball joint, of the type in which a ball-head on a ball pin is retained for swivelling movement in an outer housing having an open mouth through which the pin shank projects, is composed of two complementary metal pressings 3, 4 which are assembled to provide a pre-loaded fit around the ball-head 2 with an interposed liner or layer of hard-wearing low friction synthetic plastics bearing material (e.g. nylon) 5 by means of permanent deformation at the time of assembly of said bearing material or of a shim disposed between facing flanges of said metal pressings and/or of the metal pressings. Tht joint is conveniently provided with a flexible dust sleeve 9 secured to the housing by a clamping plate 10. In an embodiment of the invention, the top housing 3 is formed with a number of slots introducing a spring effect and the bearing material is limited to the lower housing. In another modification, the bearing material is extended to completely cover both the inner and outer surfaces and edges of the two pressings. The pre-loaded fit between the pressings and ball-head is achieved by having the bearing material in a semi-fluid or only partially set condition on assembly and/or by final deformation of. the pressings around the ballhead by means of dies. Alternatively, this is achieved by inserting between the facing flange surfaces on assembly a synthetic plastic shim having a lattice pattern or a series of protuberances on one or both faces, so as to deform the flow into the lattice indentations or spaces between the protuberances when the pressings are brought together under heat and pressure.
