Process for producing azido nucleoside derivatives

The 5'-hydroxyl group of a 2'-deoxyuridine derivative can selectively be protected by an aromatic acyl group. The selectively protected derivative thus produced is suitably utilizable for producing a 3'-azido derivative with an azide ion by, for example, introducing an appropriate leaving group such as a sulfonyl group into the 3'-hydroxyl group of the selectively protected derivative and forming a 2,3'-anhydro intermediate with a base. An azido nucleoside derivative can be produced in a high yield by removing the protective group from the protected 5'-hydroxyl group.
