Acidic gas constituents such as hydrogen sulphide, carbonyl sulphide and carbon dioxide contained in gaseous mixtures e.g. ammonia synthesis gas are separated by contacting the gaseous mixture with a solution of an alkanolamine in a dialkyl ether of a polyalkylene glycol so as to effect absorption of the acidic gas constituent in the solution. The solution containing absorbed gas is passed to a heated stripping zone, maintained at a pressure substantially lower than that during the absorption, in the presence of water, thus desorbing gas, and the stripped solution recycled. The alkanolamine may be dissolved in a dimethyl ether of a polyethylene glycol or a mixture thereof. The alkanolamine may be propanolamine, butanolamine, or diisopropanolamine.
|
