<p>A dichroic azo dye having a trifluoromethyl-substituted biphenyl skeleton represented by general formula (I), and a guest-host liquid-crystal composition and a liquid crystal display element containing the dye and showing a high order parameter all over the light absorption wavelength region, wherein A and B independently represent each optionally substituted alkyl, phenyl or cyclohexyl; X and X1 independently represent each methylene or carbonyl; and R¿1? to R12 independently represent each hydrogen, halogeno, methyl or methoxy, or each pair of R2 and R3, R5 and R6, R8 and R9, and R11 and R12 may be bonded together to thereby form an aliphatic ring, an aromatic ring or a nitrogen-containing aromatic ring having five or more members.</p> |
