A rotating piston machine has the piston contour as a sliding, sealing fit between piston and cylinder. Each piston has two piston surfaces which limit the circumferential direction of the piston, these are essentially vertical to the direction of piston rotation and the working chamber is formed by the rear face of the front piston and the front face of the piston behind. Each piston is driven and controlled via gears, such that it always rotates in the same direction but with variable speed. Adjacent pistons have opposing speed variation so that the volume of the working chambers contained between the pistons is alternately larger and smaller, and the gearing controls the maximum and minimum chamber size to always be at the same position on the path.
