Fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite (FRCMC) components (14) employed in sliding relationship to one another as automotive engine parts and the like are provided with erosion resistant qualities not found in currently available FRCMC parts. These erosion resistant FRCMC components (14) are formed from a pre-ceramic resin (12) having fibers (16) of a woven or non-woven generic fiber system disbursed throughout. Each component (14) is fired at a temperature and for a time which converts the resin (12) into a ceramic. The contacting surfaces (22) of the component (14) are then coated with a layer of erosion-resistant material (24). Alternately, the erosion resistant FRCMC components (14) can be formed by mixing the erosion resistant material (24) into the resin (12) along with the fibers (16) prior to the firing process.
