COPRECIPITANT AND METHOD OF EXTRACTING NUCLEIC ACIDS

A coprecipitant to be used in the recovery of minute amounts of nucleic acids by the alcoholic precipitation thereof with isopropyl alcohol, ethanol or the like, which is compatible with nucleic acids, neither competes with reverse transcription nor inhibits polymerase chain reaction, can yield visible white or blue precipitates in order to minimize technical errors, and improves the recovery rate of nucleic acids; and a method of extracting nucleic acids by using the coprecipitant. The coprecipitant is characterized by exhibiting the same behavior as that of nucleic acids in the process of extracting the acids from biological materials and/or specimens by centrifugal separation and being capable of precipitating as visible white or blue precipitates in the process of alcoholic separation and concentration.
