The payment checking device includes entry and/or acquisition units with compartments for coins and notes (4,6) and for payment cards (8). A discrimination unit recognises the difference between coins, notes and cards, and activates the relevant section of a checking unit, which works in association with the entry stage, and includes equipment to check all the different payment methods. An enabling unit releases money pay-outs (10) or credits, depending on the results of the checks made, and all the above procedures are controlled by a microprocessor. Four input buttons (12,14,16,18) are used to operate the machine, and a display unit (20) for entries, payouts, credit payments and existing credits is included.
