The end of the solenoid plunger is fitted with the valve element (36) made from a different material to the plunger and with a central bore. The valve element is pressed onto a main valve seat with its outer end and onto a secondary valve seat in a disc (34) pressed into the end of the plunger. A retaining ring controls the free movement of the valve element. The valve element is retained by a sleeve pressed into the end of the plunger and with a rolled over outer end to contain the valve element. The free movement of the valve element is less than the full stroke of the plunger.
