The appts. to clean a moving material, such as an underlay for paper or film, has cleaning rollers with a reversing mechanism to move them between a ready position and a working setting. In the ready position, the rollers are coupled to a drive to rotate them with a surface speed which is faster than the material movement speed. In the working position, the rollers are disengaged from the drive, and the roller surfaces speeds are as fast as the material movement, and they can be retracted. The reverse system is a rotating plate, with four rollers distributed round it at 90 deg intervals. Each cleaning roller has a cylinder mantle layer of polyurethane, with a thickness of 3-5 mm.
